25 LESSONS I LEARNED BEFORE TURNING 25:Real-Life Experiences

Every new year comes with heavy expectations and resolutions that are often broken within weeks. I’ve never really believed in sudden change just because the calendar flips. Instead, I focus on becoming the best version of myself every single day by reflecting on where I’ve been and how far I’ve come. This reflection hits even deeper for me because my birthday is on January 1st.

Since I turn a year older right as the new year begins, my birthday is my resolution.

Before turning 25, I had my life mapped out in a specific way. I expected to be financially stable, living out of state, and living free of societal expectations. While some of those things are falling into place, being financially stable and creating my own business is a whole different story, especially with our generation drowning in student loan debt (story for another day, lol). But I believe I’m on the right track though.

Looking back, the experiences I’ve navigated have taught me invaluable lessons. Practicing gratitude for how far we’ve come helps us step into who we’re becoming. Here are 25 lessons I learned before turning 25, in hopes they help you step into your highest self too.

1. Life is Not All Rainbows

Many of you might have understood this early on, but it took me a long time to truly realize it. In my early teens, I lived in my own little bubble. I thought I could just ignore anything negative simply because it was comfortable. I was naive, but reality hit me all at once in my college dorm. In a single semester, my eyes finally opened to the realities of the world and how much injustice exists outside my personal sphere. While life isn’t always smooth or fair, facing those tough realities is what builds strength and shows us where we can make a meaningful difference.

2. Not Everything is Permanent

Sadness, stress, and burnout can hit us all at once, and in those moments, you have to find the strength to keep your head up. Most tough situations pass, as long as you keep taking steps forward, whether it’s a minor setback, school stress, work struggles, or even shifting friendships. The world isn’t always fair, and feeling stuck can slow you down, but what you’re going through right now isn’t the end of your story. You have to keep fighting for your happiness, even through the hardest seasons.

3. Build Inner Strength Daily

Some challenges might feel nearly unbearable, and just when you think you’ve hit your absolute limit, a new obstacle comes along. I’ve definitely caught myself saying, “This is the worst thing I’ve ever dealt with,” only to face something even tougher down the road. But going through those moments proves one thing: resilience is a habit. When you build inner strength every day, you remind yourself that no matter what comes next, you are strong enough to carry it.

4. You Can’t Control Everything (Or Everyone)

You could literally enter a situation with the best intentions and motives, completely convinced that your solution or way of communicating will fix everything, but disappointment hits hard when you realize that people have their own minds. They have their own perspectives and timing. You simply can’t force anyone to see things your way no matter how helpful you try to be. The same rule applies to life in general; do your part, but accept that you can’t control every outcome.

5. Be Your Own Priority

Trust me, nobody will do this for you. You have to learn to prioritize yourself. This is a great way to learn about who you truly are. Some people would say it’s a bit selfish, but it’s self care. Get that beauty sleep if you need to. Take yourself on solo dates if that’s what recharges you. Always remember that your well-being matters, so take the time to pour back into yourself whenever you can.

6. It’s Okay to Outgrow People & Let Them Go

Sometimes your closest friends will pull away and tell you, “you’ve changed”. You’re damn right I’ve changed! Changed for the better. These people don’t end there after saying that. They actually stop talking to you, and that’s okay. When people step out of your life because you’re growing, let them.

NAvigating that shift can be painful. I went through a season of deep depression for several years, but also realized that I had lost all the friends I thought I could count on in the process. (If you ever find yourself in that dark space, please reach out to the National Suicide Prevention Line (1-800-273-8255). Having someone to talk to can help make all the difference. They helped me along the way, so I want to pass that along.

Through college and life, I grew into a more mature, experienced, and confident version of myself, and I realized some friends are only meant for a season. If it works to confront some, that’s worth a shot. Protect your mental health. Let go of people who criticize your growth or expect you to stay trapped in an old version of yourself. As you heal, open your heart back up to the world. You will find your true people eventually.

7. Let Negativity Motivate You

I can now truly see that so much of our negative thoughts comes from within. However, I also believe that societal nose adds fuel to the fire. I love the saying that goes “if you have something negative to say, then don’t say it at all”, but so many people just don’t get it. People love telling you what you can’t do or how you should act based on where you come from. Such communications eventually create a negative outlook about life for a lot of people. Where is the personal freedom? Next time someone tells you to do certain things to make you fit in, use that as your way to focus more on what you would rather do, and do it.

8. Stay Different and Be True to Yourself

Being polite and cordial is important, but doing that only to fit in the crowd isn’t. Peer pressure will make you compromise your values or adopt a negative mindset just to feel accepted. As DJ Khaled would say, don’t just become one of “they.” Your uniqueness is what allows you to make a real impact in this world, so own who you are without apology.

9. Focus on Your Goals

Need I say More?

10. Embrace the Good Things That Come Your Way

Don’t let the battles you’re fighting blind you from the blessings right in front of you. When life gets heavy, it’s easy to hyper-focus on what’s going wrong, but making a conscious effort to acknowledge your wins and the genuine people standing by you during your worst moments is what keeps you grounded and hopeful.

11. Stay Open Minded and Expand Your Horizons

Explore the world whenever you have the chance. Exposing your mind to new experiences broadens your mind, and gives you the chance to learn about other cultures. If traveling isn’t your preference, find other avenues; read blogs, books, anything that helps to acknowledge the fact that the world doesn’t revolve around only your set of beliefs. This keeps you humble, empathetic, and constantly evolving. The world needs minds like yours!

12. Positive & Genuine Family & Friends Take You a Long Way

Some people are simply God-sent. Sometimes, support is all you need to succeed, and to help make the world a better place. Those who truly believe in you can push you out of your comfort zone to become the best person you can ever be. Keep those people around. They are such a blessing!

13. Commit to Continuous Personal Growth

This is a gradual process. If you are willing to work on this, you can learn new things about yourself and life almost every day. For me, a big focus recently has been emotional regulation; learning not to react to everything that tests my patience. Simply taking in deep breaths or switching the topic could help with this. My goal is to always stay unbothered in many situations.

14. You Can’t Please Everyone

Dude, just do your thing. Stop draining your energy on people who seem disappointed no matter what choices you make. You can’t live your life trying to meet everyone else’s standards.

15. Don’t Let Societal Needs Affect You So Much

I used to get so angry at every gender-role comment I received. It felt limiting as a human being. I’ve been told only women wash dishes, only women should cook and clean, and I’ve been questioned about my femininity by playing the Mortal Kombat video game. Trust me, there are more intense ones, but these are just basic examples. The moral lessons is to just do you. Do not feel limited or limit yourself from certain things just because you’ve heard you shouldn’t do them. You have to try them out first to decide that for yourself. Cheers to more explorations without limits.

16. Choose The Right Friends

This is the hardest thing to do, but don’t force friendships with anyone. It just won’t last that way. It should happen naturally and genuinely. Do not ignore your gut feelings about certain people. If you are a highly intuitive person, don’t ignore your gut feelings when something feels off about someone. While open communication is important, don’t waste your energy constantly confronting people who deny their actions or repeat toxic patterns. At the end of the day, it’s much better to have a tiny circle of genuine friends than a room full of toxic ones. Be careful.

17. Don’t Compare Yourself to Others

Humans compare themselves so much to others; from relationships, to career paths, to body images. This can be extremely distracting! Try focusing on yourself. You start losing yourself when you compare so much. I know this can be very tricky, especially when you are at a low point in your life, but the grass isn’t always greener on the other side. Try reducing this habit as much as you can.

18. Allow People to Support You

Finding people who genuinely care can feel rare, but some people are very genuine. So when they step up, let them in. Sometimes, they just have good intentions in helping you. Accepting help when you need it doesn’t make you a burden or a bother. Relationships are a two-way street, and letting others carry a load with you is part of building strong connections.

19. Love Shows Up When You Least Expect It

Focus on your own journey and self-discovery. As Jada Pinkett said, ‘You are your soulmate and someone can join in on that fun.” When you stop searching out of desperation and start building a life you love, the right person usually enters the picture naturally.. You may find them in the process of finding yourself.

20. Trust Your Instincts

Stop second-guessing your gut feelings. Your intuition is one of your greatest built-in mechanisms for self-protection and guidance. It’s a good protector.

21. Work Hard & Work Smart

Do the work. Nobody is going to build your dreams for you. Setting goals is easy, but executing them requires real effort and consistency. Think of it like going to the gym: you can’t just show up and expect results without putting in the work. Push yourself, stay disciplined, and make sure your effort is aligned with strategy so you’re working smart, not just hard.

22. Prioritize Self-Care & Listen to Your Body

You have to intentionally take time out your day to recharge. Taking care of yourself is a continuous habit, but once you prioritize it, your performance and mental clarity improve dramatically. Self-care looks different every day; whether it’s nourishing your body, staying hydrated, getting active, or simply pausing to de-stress. Listen to what your body needs before it forces you to slow down.

23. It’s Okay to Restart Life

By the summer of 2019, I literally had to restart my blog. I had to take everything down and rewrite certain parts of my older posts to rebuild from scratch. I was devastated, but taking those initial steps back put me on a path to building something bigger and better than before. Setbacks, lost opportunities, or unexpected shifts aren’t the end of your story. Every time you have to restart, you’re not starting from zero; you’re starting from experience.

24. Treasure the Friends Who Stick by You Through It All

Friends who stick with you through it all; the good, the bad, and the ugly, are rare but worth it. They also handle change so well, because they understand that growth is simply a natural part of life. Hold on tight to these people, and learn to distinguish them from fair-weather friends who only appear when things are fun, or opportunistic people who only reach out when they need something. At the end of the day, genuine connections are all that matter.

25. Don’t Give Up on Yourself

Coming out of my own bubble before college meant catching up on a lot of life lessons, and there were times I felt like I was moving too slowly. But I’m learning to tune out that negative inner voice. Fear of feeling left behind shouldn’t stop you from stepping out and exploring the world. Dream big, own your vision, and keep pushing forward even when progress feels quiet. The results will come.

Shout out to you for showing up, doing the inner work, and making the progress necessary to step into your highest self. I hope these lessons resonated with you!

Wow…. thanks very much. Well detailed and informative. I got all of them well understood but my favourite point is ..

the Point 5. Be your own Priority.
I think most people don’t understand it well as I use to … at first I thought I was being selfish by taking myself to date alone, eating at a place alone and doing some stuffs alone but trust me dear it very necessary and good.

I really got to know the real me.
    What I want
    What I deserve
    How to live
    How to solve problems
    And a whole lot

I suggest people should take note of that point very well. It’s good.
And thank you very much Barbara Fosu…
Hoping to get more from you soon.

    Happy New Year πŸ”₯πŸ’―πŸ™ŒπŸΏπŸ™πŸΏ
